Philadelphia. City of Brotherly Love. Home of the Liberty Bell. A town at the forefront of the American Independence movement, and steeped in American history ever since. Situated at the junction of the Delawere and Sohuylkill rivers in Pennsylvania, Philadelphia welcomes all visitors, national and international, with open arms.
Since Swedish colonists came to this area in 1669, Philadelphia has been prominent in the history of the American nation. The Independence Hall, Liberty Bell and Presidents’ House can all be found within a block of each other at the heart of the city. William Penn's surveyor, Thomas Holme, laid the fledging metropolis out in a grid formation, making navigation easy, and the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transport Authority oversees the smooth running of a modern public transport facility for the convenience of natives and visitors alike. All the streets here run either north-south or east-west, named sequentially from Front (instead of First), along the Delaware River, to 13th Street and the main north-south thoroughfare, Broad Street (instead of 14th). Those wishing to partake of culinary delights will be able to do so with ease. Philadelphia plays host to an extraordinary variety of hotels, restaurants and cafes. Stromboli, a dish similar to Italian calzone, is a specialty in these parts and Philadelphia routinely finishes first in food service industry surveys for the best tipping cities.
Home to many famous contemporary American stars, including Bill Cosby, Will Smith, Kevin Bacon and Pink, the city also hosts a myriad museums, national Football, Baseball, Basketball and Ice Hockey teams, the world-famous Museum of Art (whose steps Sylvester Stallone immortalised in the original ’Rocky’ film) and America’s first zoo. Philadelphia’s entertainment credentials are indeed second to none!
